On Writing - summary

08 August, 2020 - 1 min read

Last night I finished reading Steven King's 'On Writing' - it was a great read. I've never actually read any of his fiction books (but I'm about to). I learnt a lot from the seasoned best seller.

I thought I would write up a quick summary of things that struck me as interesting:

Story above all else

Read a lot. Write a lot

Writing is Telepathy

Adverbs are for losers (eg 'ly' words like squeamishly).

Write with honesty - don't self censor, say it how it is

Once you find your vein of gold don't stop mining

Active voice beats the hell out of passive voice

Stories = Description + Dialog + Narration

Second draft = first draft - 10%
